Hip-hop collective Roll Deep have appeared victorious in a neck and neck battle with US RB giant Usher for the no 1 single in the official chart. The long-time east London group took the lead spot with new single great times, featuring guest vocalist Jodie Connor. Great times had been fighting head to head with Usher’s previous top selling single OMG, featuring Will.I.Am, to cling to the no 1 slot since last Wednesday’s official chart update – when less than two percent of sales separated the contenders. Roll Deep became one of the figureheads of the nascent dirt scene in 2005 when they released their first album In At The Deep End as well as 2 singles, The Avenue which topped at number eleven in July 2005, and Shake A Leg which topped at number twenty-four later that year. Roll Deep’s alumni include number one artists Dizzee Lad and Tinchy Stryder. The present line-up includes founder members Wiley, Breeze, Scratchy, Flow Dan and Danny Weed together with crew vets Brazen, Manga, J2K and Target. In the Official Albums Chart, Usher was denied again as Plan B – AKA east London local Ben Drew – reclaimed number one with 2nd album The Defamation Of Strickland Banks. The record debuted at number one 2 weeks back before briefly relinquishing the number one spot to AC / DC’s soundtrack to feature film Iron Man 2 last week. Usher’s new album Raymond V Raymond, which had been selling twenty percent more than Strickland Banks earlier in the week and was number one on Wednesday’s official chart update, had to accept entering at number two in the last countdown. The sole other new entry in the Official Singles Chart Top ten is Taio Cruz’s Mucky Picture featuring Kesha at number 10, up 2 places from last week’s number 12.
